Sandman Record is Wrong
I thought Jeff Bell ousted incumbent US Senator Clifford Case in the 1978 Republican primary? If so, there is no Sandman record.
Yes It was Jeff Bell
And what did that get him?
Mea culpa
I got it wrong. Of course Jeff Bell is the only person in New Jersey history to oust an incumbent U.S. Senator in a primary election. Charlie Sandman is the only one to beat an incumbent in a primary.
Bell ran for the Senate again in 1982, four years after he ousted Clifford Case, and lost the GOP primary to Millicent Fenwick. Frank Lautenberg won the Democratic nomination that year. He now lives in Virginia, and runs a Washington,D.C. consulting firm.
Sandman ousted Gov. Bill Cahill in 1973 and lost the general election to Brendan Byrne by over 700,000 votes. In 1974, he lost re-election to his House seat to Democrat Bill Hughes.
Wow Wally
You must be taking the Andrews loss pretty hard. What with yur weekend at bernies, Lines, editorials, debates, NYC, and Milicent comments. One could argue that Lautenberg got plenty of excellent endorsements (by papers and otherwise), did well in the debates etc...This sounds like Wally is trying to blast some insiders on the Andrews race that he disagreed with. Wally is saying "I told you debates, editorials dont matter...and that Lines do."
