It's a saga as old as Saul versus David, Red Cloud versus Crazy Horse. The scrappy old boss has to go out and try to defend his turf against the brazen young challenger bucking to be if not his successor exactly, then the leader of a new breed.
That's the way it is in Burlington County, where 36-year old Dawn Lacy, acting chair of the Republican Party, is facing Glenn Paulsen, 60, the party's former chair and enduring craggy-faced poster boy for GOP power.
When Lacy threw Paulsen's surrogates out of party headquarters the day after the election on Nov. 6th, the boss went into attack mode and promptly started stirring up opposition to the bright-eyed young politico whom he'd initially brought into the fold to head up the party's youth recruitment efforts.
In this ongoing generational battle, youth prevailed over age today as Superior Court Judge John A. Sweeney ruled that Paulsen's faction cannot use the party's letterhead, emails, funds or slogans in intraparty correspondence to schedule meetings or ape official acts. Moreover, Charles Lambiase, the party's paid certified public accountant, must comply with Lacy's order for a full and transparent review of the Republican Party's financial records.
"We were very successful today," said Lacy following the judge's conference. "It is unfortunate that we had to go to a judge so that he could declare the obvious, which is that these individuals' actions were highly disruptive and confusing to party membership."
On that score specifically, Sweeney ruled that the Paulsen allies' designation of a Dec. 1st mandatory meeting of delegates to install a new chairperson is not an official meeting of the Republican Party, and upheld Lacy's assertion that she is under no obligation to hold a special election prior to the end of her term in June of next year.
Lacy said Paulsen wants his ally, Bill Layton, nominated as chair on the eve of the New Jersey presidential primary and on the eve of what is likely to be a Republican primary of candidates hoping to succeed U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton in the 3rd congressional district.
"This is a mythical meeting they are fabricating to maintain control," said the acting chair. "They have a sense of entitlement and they want this seat now."
Paulsen vowed to fight on and challenged Lacy to defend her acting chairmanship before the party as a whole.
"The county committee will forge ahead and have an election," said the former chair. "She should compete in the election. The last time I checked we were not in some tin horn dictatorship, but America. If she thinks she has the support, she ought to run."

Red Cloud vs Crazy Horse
This is unnecessary. Just hold an election. Lacy has Allen, Wujcik,Stanfield & Haines in her corner. LOL!
Who Glen Got?....Oh yea the rest of the party!!
Meanwhile the Dems are lining up at the gate,
"DCCC will endorse Adler, Stender"
If I recall, Red Cloud was much wiser.
How Funny
Paulsen thinks he will have the county committee election anyway. What a joke he is. Get's beat up bad in court and then thinks he can just do what he wants anyway.
He wrote the bylaws to protect himself and now he wants to throw them out as Lacy uses them to her benefit. Paulsen is a joker. He got fired as counsel to the party and obviously has a score to settle. He should be working with Dawn to unify the party, not continue to tear it apart.
Hey Glenn, maybe Dawn will run and maybe she does have the support. You will just have to wait 6 months or so to find out!
The Irony
"The last time I checked we were not in some tin horn dictatorship, but America."
Is this a misquote? Glenn Paulsen said that??!!!
I know why she doesn't want to hold an election
She doesn't have the votes. I read the letters that were sent to my home, including one from the County Committee calling for an Election. That letter was signed by the Mayor of Mount Laurel. Lacy can't get elected officials from her own town to support her position. This shows alot of weakness on Lacy's part, and whether there is an election on Saturday or in the future, Lacy doesn't have the votes to win.
I know why he does want to hold an Election
because he wants to keep the books closed.
Its over for Layton
If he is lucky 50 of the 400+ county comm ppl will show up saturday to his illegal meeting. Oh yeah, the illegal meeting that costs $4,000. County Com mtgs were always free at a fire station and should not cost the gop. I guess he is trying to bribe the ones he has not already threatened.
Get out of our county Porky Pig, We dont want you!
ouchhhhhh! Paulsen needs a band-aid for that booboo!
Justice has prevailed! So obvious even a layperson could figure it out!
Sounds like Lacy doesn't have the votes
If she did she would have an election and put this whole thing behind her. Her fate is sealed because she doesn't have a united Mt. Laurel supporting her. Maybe when she asks people for their vote she can tell them that she really needs it because she can't muster enough votes in her own town.
I think the support will surprise some
and since it's not worth attending the meeting on Sat. I guess I might as well go stimulate the economy and do a little shopping - while I am out I will pick up a congratulations card for Ms. Lacy. I really didn't want to attend the meeting anyway.
again I ask...
Why should either of these two want to be county chairman as long as Glenn paulsen is around? If Lacy wins, she has to fight off Paulsen's meddling, and if Layton wins he is seen by everyone as a puppet of the real boss. They should settle it objectively: flip a coin, and the loser has to be chairman.
What a perspective - I don't believe Lacy would have to
worry about Paulsen's meddling. Layton, if he should ever become Chair will be the most disrespected "boss" in the state. He already looks like Paulsen's puppet can't do much to change that now. People are really laughing and relieved they won't be attending "an unofficial" meeting on Saturday
shanghai??????????????
"Who is she -- some third-world dictator? She is trying to shanghai the organization and I fear she is being manipulated by others," Paulsen said.
shang·hai
tr.v. shang·haied, shang·hai·ing, shang·hais
1. To kidnap (a man) for compulsory service aboard a ship, especially after drugging him.
2. To induce or compel (someone) to do something, especially by fraud or force: We were shanghaied into buying worthless securities.
[After Shanghai1, from the former custom of kidnapping sailors to man ships going to China.]
I heard someone was relieved
to hear about Judge Sweeney's declaration that Lacy is the Chair of the Party, and now he wants to make sure Russell does not get that Chief of Staff position after all....maybe Lacy can turn the other cheek and help him out.
