Debunking Doherty's Bogus Rubbish

Last Thursday around 1 p.m., I began my dissertation defense -- a 45-minute talk for the final stage of the Ph.D. process. At almost exactly the time I was wrapping up, Assemblyman Michael Doherty (R-Washington) issued a press release titled "New Scientific Data Justifies Repealing Global Warming Response Act".

When people learn of my engineering background, they often ask why I changed gears and pursued a path in media and politics.

Mike Doherty is Exhibit A.

I consider the well-funded, coordinated assault on and politicization of science to be one of the most dangerous threats to our country's future.

Doherty's statement, which was noticed by the Drudge Report, falsely claims that "[t]here are many credible members of the scientific community who have questioned the theory of global warming, and now we have some scientists actually suggesting the earth's temperatures may be entering a period of dramatic cooling." It continues: "According to recent news reports, a top observatory that has been measuring sun spot activity predicts that global temperatures will drop by two degrees over the next 20 years as solar activity slows and the planet drastically cools down."

Apparently he is referring to "news reports" such as this editorial which points to the research of Dr. Kenneth Tapping, the project director at Canada's National Research Council at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory. Tapping was not directly quoted, so I reached out and asked if Doherty's statement is an accurate characterization of his work and conclusions.

Tapping replied: "Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of bogus rubbish circulating on the web. I make no predictions on global climate one way or the other. I am not a climatologist. The only thing I foolishly discussed with someone who put a private conversation on the web was that the next solar cycle is a bit late starting. NOAA predictions are that it will not be getting under way until well into 2009. We concur with that prediction. For the climatological consequences of that, if any, I am afraid you will need to speak to a climatologist." He continued: "The moral of the story is that one has no control about what people put on the web, and there is little that one can do about it afterwards."

Almost comically underscoring his profound ignorance on the difference between weather and climate, Doherty cites a weather man -- one with no expertise on climate science -- as his second example of dissent with the universal scientific consensus.

Doherty is a dangerous politician who through willful ignorance would deny scientific evidence and readily accept junk science if it fits his ideological agenda. And he will continue to recklessly abuse the stature of his office to attempt to deceive the public.

Who knows what he'll propose next week? He might call for tearing down Xanadu since it's encroaching on the habitat of the Jersey Devil.
Perhaps he'll argue for offshore drilling rigs as our best chance for finding the Loch Ness Monster. Or maybe in a joint press conference with the Bigfoot hunters, he'll demand stricter enforcement of the Highlands Act in order to protect Sasquatch.

Bogus Rubish?

Doherty is right-get over it. If you want bogus rubish look yourself in the mirror. You'll see all the bogus rubish fit to print staring right back at you. Man made Global warming: How arrogant

Assemblyman Mike Doherty

To paraphrase Bob Dylan, "Doherty don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows". He needs a scientist. Doherty has been making his life's work to debunk global warming for the last several years. While some other members of his party recognize the dangers imposed by global warming, Doherty continues to stick his head in the sand. Juan Melli is right on: slick, under-informed politicos like Doherty are the real danger to critically thinking people every where. Last year, I attended a 'debate' on global warming between Assemblywoman Linda Stender and Doherty. Doherty claimed then, as he does now, that global warming does not exist. While Stender brought with her Dr. Alan Robuck of Rutgers University, Doherty had at his side a lawyer/spokesperson, a Mr. James Taylor, from the Heartlands Institute. The fact that the Heartlands Institute is funded in large part by big oil companies makes one question the credibility of their motivation herein. The final kicker was when an audience member asked Doherty if he believed in evolution. Doherty's response: “It does not matter. Evolution or creationism. It just does not matter.” So it goes. Perhaps Doherty also can defend his own dissertation on "Why The Earth is Flat", and add his research to the Flat Earth Society at www.theflatearthsociety.org.

In 1974 the fear was GLOBAL COOLING

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,944914,00.html

So if Global Cooling was going to mean famine then Global Warming means an abundant food supply for all.

These "scientists" predict the weather in the same way a psychic stands in a casino and predicts the next spin of the Roulette Wheel.

08/18/08 10:46 am

science

Science is evolving every day. New findings are coming out and alot of this stuff is still unsolved. The left spins just as much as the far right using scientist who agree with them. So don't say that Mr. Doherty is dangerous when you have loons like Al Franken spouting off crazy jibberish. No queston polution needs to get under control, but the US is way ahead of nations like India, China, and Russia. 3 years ago after Katrina we were told by the "Chicken Little Crowd" that super Hurricanes caused by global warming would be hitting hit us again and again. Well??????

08/18/08 6:38 pm

Idiocy Cubed

You can still find scientists who'll say that there's no provable causation between smoking and cancer....so what!

The bottom line is that the vast majority of scientists and doctors know that smoking kills.

The same is true about global warming being affected by man made carbon emissions.

Melli actually documents the FACT that Doherty used false/distorted information to drive his political agenda and the best y'all can do is to call him names.

I keep tellin y'all; ad hominems are fallacies. lol

Not so Smart

So Melli is smart enough to get a PhD, but dumb enough to believe all the unprovable science and left wing spin on global warming.
There is abolustely ZERO definitive proof global warming is man made. Since the average temperature of the Earth has been consistent since 1978, there is nothing to discern the current situation with a fixed period of warming. What caused the ice age?
Melli has his PhD in mechanical engineering, and that's terrific. Too bad he hasn't gotten out of Pre-K when is comes to disseminating left wing hype.

08/19/08 10:57 am

Great post

The Republican Party + Bogus Hack Science = Perfect together. A lot of these global warming skeptics are also the ones who said Terri Shaivo could come out of her coma. Great job Juan.

08/19/08 1:23 pm

Doherty, educate thyself

Compare the two methods of coming to a conclusion: Doherty checks no sources and merely patches together junk science statements from non-experts to promote his luddite view on global warming vs. Melli checks his sources, looks for scientific consensus, and uses his own expertise to come to a conclusion. When one considers what has been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, combined with the empirical data involving man-made pollutants significantly contributing to global warming, the conclusion is an objective one: Global warming is a real and a threat to the earth and its ecological systems.

What I can't discern is how acknowledging the reality of global warming is a "threat" to the junk science naysayers' worldviews. Perhaps because it would necessitate a change in behavior (moving away from an oil-based economy; perhaps more regulation, the boogeyman of conservative economics)? I can see how evolution threatens some theological worldviews, even though I don't see belief in divinity and evolutionary biology as being necessarily mutually exclusive terms. But why resist global warming?

It seems like some on the right (not all, hopefully, since we will need to come together to combat global warming collectively), as with Doherty, are appropriating the language of social theorist Gerald Graff, who mentioned "Teach the controversy" as a pedagogical aim in one of his works, for their own twisted purposes. There is no "controversy" with global warming.

08/19/08 1:41 pm

The truth hurts

Wasn't pollution much worse in the 1800s? If Global Warming exists and it didn't exist in 1974 that can only mean it was caused by all the strict environmental controls put in place after that time. What that means is if people want to stop Global Warming they should be fighting for more "greenhouse gases", not less.

Similarly, while the Global Warming freaks claim that "melting icebergs" will raise sea level temperatures, they forget that ice has more volume than water. Melting icebergs will actually LOWER sea levels. Put a bottle of water in your icebox and see what happens.

Not Cost Effective

So; when does the debunking begin?

Let’s grant that increased CO2 produces some warming effect; how much? All – that is to say every – estimate is based upon nothing more than supposition. Educated guesses, yes, but guesses nonetheless. Given the repeated, demonstrable changes in Earth’s climate over the course of human history, let alone geologic time, what would make ANYONE conclude that a minor, short term temperature change is anthropogenic? Indeed, it requires more than a little hubris for the human race to claim, on such thin evidence, that something which has happened numerous times before MUST, now, be the result of human activity.

And is it not interesting that the “party of science”, which declares all skepticism about the causes and effects of “global warming” completely out of bounds – the “science” being “settled” – contemporaneously asserts that the humanity of an unborn human child is an open – probably religious– question?

Climate change alarmists commence their argument with a Panglossian view that we live in the best of all possible climates and that any change thereto will, perforce, be disastrous. Nonsense. As Lundberg demonstrates, even assuming the possibility of anthropogenic climate change, the rational course may be to manage the consequences, infinitely less expensive and disruptive than attempting wholesale changes to modern existence. Besides, if warming increases NJ’s winter temp, this is a bad thing ... why?

Finally, even assuming that we decide to act, locally or nationally (despite the likelihood that such actions will have absolutely no effect upon global climate), the left consistently opposes essentially everything which might actually help. Few of them support nukes, the only technically feasible, economically rational short term solution. (Rutgers is funding attorneys to combat Oyster Creek’s reauthorization) Essentially none of them support hydroelectric projects (might tick off a few fish). They happily support windmills – somewhere else (witness Martha’s Vinyard) – but oppose the construction of the transmission lines necessary to move the power from where it is generated to where it is needed.

Put simply, there exists essentially no evidence that any likely climate change will be “disastrous”. We have absolutely no idea what circumstances or technology might be like 100 years hence, and given that the left rarely considers problems beyond the next election cycle, why the present panic? Sure, reduce emissions; start by opening (say) 100 new nukes around the country, expediting their approval and banning lawsuits against them. Dam up a few more streams; build windmills in Teddy Kennedy’s lagoon. Let Pickens build his windmill farm, too. Wonderful.

“Politicization of science”? I’ll wager, right now, a cold Sam Adams that in 2025, global temperature has not increased significantly. (I’d take it out 100 years, but neither of us would be around). I will further wager that the only certain affects of the Global Warming Response Act will be massive new taxes and fees, an increase in the size and scope of government (especially the DEP), substantially increased energy prices, and a further constriction of New Jersey leftist-crippled economy. Got a bet, Juan?

Bottom Line

No one said that common sense solutions shouldn't be used. We should absolutely move away from an oil-based economy, but we cannot until the technology can provide enough energy. There are other common sense measures we can use without destroying our economy.
The left is hellbent on making sure they drastically change our behavior with no definitive proof. They also want to negotiate and adhere to treaties that are disproportionately unfair to the US and also negotiates away our soveriegnty.
Just like Obama wants to re-distribute more of our wealth to a "world fund", it's moronic policy like this that give the "looney left" it's name.

Mountaintop

I suspect melting glaciers are more the source of impact than icebergs.  I’m no scientist but I’ve seen calving glaciers and I took junior high math.  If you take a volume of ice currently sitting above the top of the water and introduce even a fraction of its volume (as water) into the water, it’s a net addition of water.  Sea levels will rise, no?

What is “sea level temperature?”

Do you really expect to be taken seriously referring to “global warming freaks?”  Galileo and all.

Isn’t this debate so over in real scientific circles?

08/20/08 5:27 pm

You know what's over"

"Isn’t this debate so over in real scientific circles?"

No, it's not. You know when the Debate on Global Warming will be over?.. When it goes the way of the Dodo like all the BS about the "Hole in the Ozone". Remember the Ozone hole that's going to kill us all in ten years? Remember how it was supposed to get so big that the earth would fry?

NEVER HAPPENED
Remember all that crap about not using areosol cans ?
Today it's lightbulbs, then it was areosal.
Limbaugh, to his credit defeated Al Gore in a debate about the hole in the Ozone long ago.
The Ozone hold expands and contracts naturally, that's why no one talks about it or trys to scare you with it anymore. Today the ozone hole should be covering the United States, according to Al Gore.

The wackos dropped the ozone hole, and took up Man Made Global warming. When that gets shot to pieces, (and it currently is)they'll start some other new age environmental concern.

Melli Has a PhD.....

...and makes a convincing argument.

Most of the worlds PhD's with credentials in this field (as opposed to TV weathermaen and political hacks and oil industry whores) believe that anthropogenic GW is a real threat.

Is there opposition? Yes; hell, there are still PhD's that dispute the causitive relationship between smoking and cancer.

Everything we need to do to solve GW also has the good effect of freeing us from the need for ANY imported energy, and reducing the amount of toxins in aour air and food, and of creating millions of new American jobs in dozens of new industries.

The ONLY semi "rational" reason to back the GW deniers is to insure greater "profits" for OPEC and transnational corporations like EXXON Mobil.

Most of you who deny GW here do so because you believe the crap you hear on partisan hackery like Fox news and Rush Limbaugh......you're being screwed every time you fill up your tanks and the people screwing you are laughing their asses off as you defend their interests.

Meanwhile, even if there was a 1 in 3 chance that GW could seriously screw up our biosphere wouldn't it be prudent to try to stop it???

Look at what the stakes are?

Would play Russian Roulette shooting your children with only one in three chambers loaded? I doubt it.

Yet you're willing to buy the Exxon/Limbaugh take on the future of our climate just because you have some silly idelogical "loyalty" to "your side".

Wake the F up people!

PS As for the delusional/ignorant "argument"  that the volume of water floating as ice wouldn't raise sea levels.....please THINK about the fact that melting iceCAPS and glaciers also exist on LAND.....and when they melt and slide ito the water that additional volume flows into the OCEAN; therby resulting in overall rising water levels.

"Most of you who deny GW here do so because you believe the crap you hear on partisan hackery like Fox news and Rush Limbaugh"

Oh, and we should listen to YOU because you're NOT a partisan hack? Get a clue, everyone is a partisan hack. If they say they're not, and they're on a political forum, they're lying.

I don't believe in man made global warming because there is no proof that temperature changes are anything other that natural occurences.

Humans are made up of cabon dioxide! Our own bodies release it into the air. So if you're so concerned about CO2 destroying the planet, LEAVE!

If anything is warming the earth, it's that glaring ball of fire called the sun. You could fit roughly one million earths inside the sun. So if the sun's temperature changes a degree, earths temperature is going to change too. The little spit of CO2 in the atmosphere ain't got nuthin to do with it. That's why Mars is also warming. It's solar warming.. not man made warming. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070228-mars-warming.html

We've a better chance of being destroyed by a comet... THAT has happened in Earths histroy. THAT IS REAL. If you had any idea how violent the universe is, the last thing you'd be worried about is Global Warming. You actaully have more reason to worry about getting killed by a gama ray burst.

Phil Wohlrab Try Doing Some Reading....

Real environmentalists knew that the corn ethanol industry was a boondoggle/rip off from the start.   Archer Daniels Midland and the rest of the farm lobby used legitimate concerns about fuel and th environment to make killings at the taxpayers expense.

Sadly BOTH political parties have been corrupted by agribusiness.... (it's the SYSTEM stupid).

What follows is called a "link".   If you click on it, you actually get to read a detailed article on this subject....that was prophetic A YEAR AGO!

 http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/15635751/the_ethanol_scam_one_of_americas_biggest_political_boondoggles

.....here's a snippet...

 >>>>>>>>>>The great danger of confronting peak oil and global warming isn't that we will sit on our collective asses and do nothing while civilization collapses, but that we will plunge after "solutions" that will make our problems even worse. Like believing we can replace gasoline with ethanol, the much-hyped biofuel that we make from corn.

Ethanol, of course, is nothing new. American refiners will produce nearly 6 billion gallons of corn ethanol this year, mostly for use as a gasoline additive to make engines burn cleaner. But in June, the Senate all but announced that America's future is going to be powered by biofuels, mandating the production of 36 billion gallons of ethanol by 2022. According to ethanol boosters, this is the beginning of a much larger revolution that could entirely replace our 21-million-barrel-a-day oil addiction. Midwest farmers will get rich, the air will be cleaner, the planet will be cooler, and, best of all, we can tell those greedy sheiks to fuck off. As the king of ethanol hype, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, put it recently, "Everything about ethanol is good, good, good."

This is not just hype -- it's dangerous, delusional bullshit. Ethanol doesn't burn cleaner than gasoline, nor is it cheaper. Our current ethanol production represents only 3.5 percent of our gasoline consumption -- yet it consumes twenty percent of the entire U.S. corn crop, causing the price of corn to double in the last two years and raising the threat of hunger in the Third World. And the increasing acreage devoted to corn for ethanol means less land for other staple crops, giving farmers in South America an incentive to carve fields out of tropical forests that help to cool the planet and stave off global warming.

So why bother? Because the whole point of corn ethanol is not to solve America's energy crisis, but to generate one of the great political boondoggles of our time. Corn is already the most subsidized crop in America, raking in a total of $51 billion in federal handouts between 1995 and 2005 -- twice as much as wheat subsidies and four times as much as soybeans. Ethanol itself is propped up by hefty subsidies, including a fifty-one-cent-per-gallon tax allowance for refiners. And a study by the International Institute for Sustainable Development found that ethanol subsidies amount to as much as $1.38 per gallon -- about half of ethanol's wholesale market price.<<<<<<<<<<

FYI We are not made out of CO2.

Earth's organic chemistry is carbon based; but that's an element different from CO2 which is a gas.  We are not "made up of CO2".  The weight of the CO2 that is within us at any one time is realatively negligible in quantitative terms.

See, CO2 is a greenhouse gas.
