Read an e-mail sent to The Record's Charles Stile and Alfred Doblin by State Senate Gerald Cardinale, in response to Stile's column on Cardinale's re-election campaign against Joseph Ariyan:
Subject: politically biased style oops stile
You were right on target. We might have designed a mailer with Osama bin Laden but we did not. The brochure proposal depicting Ariyan with a terrorist was vetoed by me. Ariyan stood alone on that cover.
"Terrified of losing his seat" That's laughable what's your basis? Did you see me in the final campaign days? No. You are skillfully creating an unsupported conclusion. My poll showed us up 18. You were privy to their pole showing us up even more. Some terror. Even with 2 million in broadcast TV 20 pts in 10 days can't happen to a known candidate with 93% name id.
You persist in nit picking every detail of the ADC connection while you ignore the big picture. Khoury has enormous influence over Ariyan. He helped fund raise, see the ELEC report charges for Khoury's efforts. He helped plot strategy, see the ELEC reports taking the law office rent as a campaign contribution. He even helped draw that ridiculous ethics complaint which your paper ignored when they became convinced it was simply a ploy.
But you sprung it on me at the debate. You did better than Ariyans staff could have hoped to do on their own. If they did not reward you, perhaps you should file an unfair labor charge at them. That complaint is being heard on Thursday. If you were a journalist instead of a sensationalist you would acknowledge that It will be summarily dismissed. It isn't even new. It’s been brought up in 2 prior campaigns. The voters spoke then as they have spoken now.
You are right that I am unapologetic. I have no reason to be otherwise. Your abuse of your position thru this contest warrants an apology to your employer, your reader, and to my constituents. My constituents are not incensed at me despite your best shot at inciting. Judging by the calls we are getting they are unhappy with you and your employer. Nor is Tom Wilson unhappy. He is used to dealing with sleaze like you and Doblin.
You are selective on the authorities you quote. Your test seems to be if they agree with Ariyans position they can be cited, but if they do not they are unworthy. Why did you not call a conservative Jewish source like the "Jewish Voice" for comment? Dr. Daniel Pipes is another credible expert on Islamic fascism. You ignored him. I told you its not just Ibish but many members of the ADC who spout the same vile pro jihad pro suicide murderer propaganda. But you ignore all that either because you are too lazy to do your job or because you don't want to risk finding Ariyan staff propaganda is flawed.
I put the facts before the voters and let them do their own extrapolation. I did not "accuse.” It’s amazing you don't recognize that the FBI sweeps after 9/11 were meant to protect you and me from additional terror attacks. They did not pick up landscapers in Pal Park or Fairview. They picked up likely terrorists or potential terror supporters. These folks were deported to keep you and me safe.
In America all are entitled to a lawyer. But we draw conclusions about firms that seem to be a magnet for certain types of cases. Bruce Cutler was often identified as a mob lawyer. The firm Ariyan says he founded attracted many clients picked up in the post 9/11 sweeps. If you won't draw the connection you are particularly dense. And then you have the gall to nit pick a typo in our brochure cite even after being given a proper cite, an innocent error but you use it cleverly to undermine my credibility . Did you check other sources or just play gotcha.
You did come up with one thing I did not know. You mention a blistering mailer from the JDL. I would like a copy but I will ask them, not you to provide it. And you take off on Allen Rapapport first denigrating him as a "flooring contractor". What has that got to do with your story? Allen was one of many Jewish and Christian folks who became aware of Ariyan's ADC connection and were sickened. Allen called the ADL himself and got a far different response than you wrote. They told Allen the ADC was not as bad as CAIR. Not exactly what you have been saying although you did fudge a little bit about occasional disagreements between the groups.
You can speculate about Ariyans future candidacies, I will not. I will give him credit for a significant major accomplishment. He has taken Joe Ferriero's organization broke. I will share some of the credit for that feat with him. He has also proven that money alone can’t win all the time.
Joey is broke and more and more impediments to no bid contracts are being enacted. It will be a little harder to restock that warchest. The campaign is over and thank God I won't have to put up with your pro Ariyan rhetoric much longer.

Your response to Doblin shows the world what kind of guy you are, Gerry.
The Senator has a right to
The Senator has a right to defend himself against exaggeration, and sarcastic hypotheticals.
If you've ever dealt with Doblin...
Cardinale forgot that Doblin is a columnist and opinions editor, not a journalist. He seems to pride himself on not taking journalistic integrity into consideration when he writes. Unfortunately, he also gets off on the backlash attention. The best thing would be for everyone to ignore him, including Wally and whoever chooses the quote of the day on this site.

Day 1 of Gerry Cardinale's FOR GOD SAKE PLEASE RETIRE tour!
The Record's dysfunctional point-of-view.
I agree with Cardinale.
The Record refuses to acknowledge that Senator Cardinale was ever at risk in the first place. This campaign was nothing but perception over reality with the BCDO proclaiming that money and broadcast NY television would oust an embedded incumbent in a Republican district.
The Record failed to be objective because they just don't like Cardinale. He's arrogant and a bit self absorbed and doesn't get along with his own Assembly runningmates. But he is effective and never lost a race.
More importantly, why was Ariyan ever taken seriously in the first place?
What hard data existed to suggest he could win? His positions on issues were hard left with no basis for support in this district. Like Arohnson last year, the media WANTED the race to be competitive versus the race ACTUALLY BEING COMPETITIVE.
More importantly, why would The Record enable the BCDO? Why play into the fiction that Ariyan was ever in the race?
Ironically, Republican Mike Guarino fared better against Democratic incumbent Paul Sarlo with NO MONEY AT ALL. Had The Record actually covered that race, Guarino might have won. Instead, they bought into the Sarlo is this emerging power when he ran worse in Bergen County than he did four years earlier...
The lesson for The Record is to REPORT THE RACES, NOT HANDICAP POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS. There were no issues in the 39th, but in the 36th you had EnCap which has been on the headlines of the paper for 10 months! Why wouldn't they credibly cover Guarino? Why didn't Sarlo debate Guarino? Why did he work so hard in having Guarino removed from the ballot only for Guarino to get written-in along with his runningmates?
Money doesn't make a candidacy. That is the lesson of Ariyan. The lack of money can break a real candidacy. That is the lesson of Guarino's defeat.
The Record is a joke
The Record's coverage of the 39th race was laughable. They tried to influence rather than report. For whatever reason, they do not like Cardinale, so they bend (or break) the truth in an attempt to have him loose and to sully him after the race is over. They never confirm or follow up. For example, besides the 39th race, on their OPRA article on Sunday, they complain that Wayne Township violated OPRA. In support, they get a quote from their attorney Thomas Cafferty. They failed to find out, and report, that Cafferty's law firm is the Town Attorney for Wayne, who, ostensibly advised Wayne that they are in compliance with OPRA.
Dear Gerry, from Dainel Pipes
Senator Cardinale says that he got information about Arabs from Daniel Pipes. Here is my version of what Daniel Pipes may have sent to Cardinale.
From: Daniel Pipes
To: Senator Gerald Cardinale
Demarest, NJ
Dear Gerry:
As per your request, please find attached pertinent information about your opponent's links to terrorism and extremism. This, I suggest, will assure your victory in November.
I believe that distinguishing between real and phony moderation, obviously, is not a job for amateurs like U.S. government officials. I have made a career vilifying Arabs and Muslims and my expertise has come in handy in so many venues such as political campaigns, collegiate freedom of expression debates and freedom of the press in general. I have set up Campus Watch to ensure that only those who support my views are permitted to teach or speak in American universities. I established a Campus Watch website after failing in my own pursuit of an academic career, to take revenge on the scholarly community that rejected me. The site is a showcase of the signature distortions that serve as the foundation for my twenty-five year career. I am a master at twisting words, quoting people out of context, and stretching the truth to suit my purposes.
I have also set up shadow agencies to ensure that my views on the Middle East, namely, that only a decisive military defeat of the Palestinians will resolve the Palestine issue, are advocated. Unfortunately, all others, including numerous prominent Jewish academics, I have labeled as Jihadist, Islamists, and terrorists. All these labels, including one of my own coinage, "Islamo-fascists" are easy but powerful labels of choice to defeat the surging Arab and Muslim population in the U.S. No wonder I am known as the world's leading Islamophobe.
In New Jersey, I believe you have a decisively winnable case against your opponent. Just accuse him of supporting terrorism. Accuse him of being an extremist, because I will provide you with a paper trail, the record, public and private, Internet, print, domestic and foreign - of his Arab buddies, of his individual or institutional ties to Anti-American activities. Such tactics have been most productive with intellectuals, activists, and imams- all of whom have a paper trail that can easily be exploited.
Your opponent's law partner is an Arab Christian, so I will devote my attacks on his links to ADC and especially its communications director, Hussein Ibish. I will not talk here about my other usual target, namely the Council on American Islamic Relations. Hussein Ibish of ADC was rude to me so many times that I often refused to engage him in interviews or debates. His large stature wedded to his eloquent and readily available rebuttals scare me. That is why I am providing you quotations (albeit out context and dubiously documented) to shatter the good image of ADC.
Remember, the more you repeat lies about Arabs and Muslims, the more the gullible American public believes them. When you do use me a resource, few will dare to question your allegations. Do use my now famous statement that "the Muslim population in this country is not like any other group, for it includes within it a substantial body of people…who share with the suicide hijackers a hatred of the United States."
I have always argued that more than 80% of American Muslims are terrorist sympathizers. I have always argued that to ensure the safety of our nation we must be ready to intern all Arab and Muslim citizens. I have also demanded that America's Muslims are the enemy within and I have called for the unrestricted racial profiling and monitoring of Muslims in the military.
I do not know why in late 2003, President Bush appointed me to serve on the USIP (United States Institute of Peace). Unless Bush does not read my blogs or articles, I do not believe in peace.
I have long argued that only a decisive Israeli military defeat of the Palestinians will we resolve the conflict to our advantage. I do not believe in the President's vision of a two-state solution, one Israeli and the other Palestinian. I once said that "the Palestinians are a miserable people … and they deserve to be." When I write about the Arabs and Muslims, I do not distinguish between radical and moderate. There is no reason to do so for all hide a hidden but sinister agenda agaisnt America and ISrael..I know that my appointment would have not be approved since the Senate, led by Ted Kennedy introduced bill to prevent my nomination. This explains Bush's trickery of appointing me during the Summer Recess when Congress was not in session. So my appointment lasted only 18th months- not he normal 4 years given to an approved nominee.
I despise everything Arab- even their falafel (thankfully, we have unilaterally declared it to be an Israeli delicacy.) I always look down in disgust at them and make every effort to obsessively look for dirt to smear their image in public discourse. When I fail to find lies about Muslims, I fabricate them. I made a lucrative career being an Arab and a Muslim basher. Across the Hudson River, I recenlty waged a relentless war against Debbie Al-Montasser, an Arab Muslim who was supposed to head an Arab language charter school in Brooklyn, NY. Why should teach the language of terrorism? After we toppled her, we spitefully appointed a Jewish woman to replace the Arab principal. Our choice was an avoid Zionist who does not even speak Arabic.
I urge you to disavow any knowledge of or friendship with Arabs and Muslims in your Districts. They will turn against you. Do not support their efforts to become politically active or enjoy their rights as equal citizens. I once compared the American Muslim voter registration drives to those of the Communist Party USA and instilled in the public the fear that as the population of Muslims in the United States grows, so does anti-Semitism, and that Black converts (to Islam) tend to hold vehemently anti-American, anti-Christian and anti-Semitic attitudes.
With our maturing relationship and your wife's to the Jewish Defense League (which is unfortunately is classified as domestic terrorist organization by FBI), you can rest assured. Believe me, I know what extremism is.
Good luck, Mr. Cardinale. You are a true American. My congratulations in advance.
Yours truly,
Daniel Pipes

The Record has never given Cardinale a fair shake
I recall in the 1980's when The Record was ticked off because Cardinale was holding up a judicial appointment they favored. They gave him grief the whole campaign but he still won. The first words of Cardinale's victory speech on local television was "Tonight, we defeated the Bergen Record." The next day, I read the Record's article about the victory and for some strange reason that quote never appeared. So much for journalistic honesty.
The sad fact is that the Record will never give a conservative Republican a fair shake.
Al Doblin has been constantly wrong on his conclusions
Who, what, when, where, and why, were taught the day Al Doblin took off from school to attend a NOW rally.
"Sometimes it looks as if the Democrats are out to win at all costs, while the Republicans are out to compromise at all costs." Thomas Sowell, September 8, 2007 - Random Thoughts.
Gerald, Thou Doth Protest Too Much...
Only someone who is guilty as charged would react in such a shrill manner.
You won the election. All you had to do was keep your mouth shut and take the legitimate criticism like a man.
By writing such a ridiculous screed, you've just displayed what an arrogant fool you actually are.
Then again, if you truly believe all your campaign tactics were so 100% righteous; why not challenge Stile to a public debate on the subject.
Make our day Gerald.
